McDonnell Douglas C-17 Globemaster III

The McDonnell Douglas C-17 Globemaster III is the newest airlifter in the United States Air Force inventory.  First flown in 1991 and entering service in 1995, the C-17 combines the capabilities of the tactical airlifter role found in the C-130 Hercules and the strategic airlifter role in the C-5 Galaxy while also replacing the aging and worn out C-141 Starlifter fleet, which had been in service since 1965.

McDonnell Douglas, later Boeing after the 1997 merger of the two companies, built the C-17 out of the former's Long Beach, California plant.  The aircraft is capable of taking off and landing from runways as short as 3,000 feet and carrying a full payload of cargo over 2,500 miles without in-flight refueling.  In-flight refueling extends the Globemaster III's range to a global scale, allowing the aircraft to land just about anywhere in the world to complete the Air Force mission.

In addition to the United States Air Force, the air forces of Canada, the United Kingdom, NATO, Australia, Kuwait, Qatar, India, and the United Arab Emirates operate the C-17.
