2016 Rhode Island ANG Open House & Airshow
Written on August 2, 2016.
The 2016 Rhode Island ANG Open House & Airshow was held on June 11-12, 2016 and was supposed to be headlined by the USAF Thunderbirds. Just a week and a half prior to their appearance in Rhode Island, on June 2, Major Alex Turner, flying the opposing solo position on the team, experienced an engine failure following a flyover the the United States Air Force Academy Graduation in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Major Turner safely ejected after guiding his jet to a field where no one else would get injured or killed. That same day, Captain Jeff Kuss of the US Navy Blue Angels sadly lost his life while beginning a practice demonstration in Smyrna, Tennessee.
The Thunderbirds announced a safety stand-down, and their appearance in the Rhode Island ANG show was not to be. Zinger Aviation Media proceeded with the planned trip to the Quonset State Airport without the Thunderbirds' appearance for a show that clearly needed the Thunderbirds' appearance.
These photos were taken on June 12, 2016, and are the result of realizing that the video camera had malfunctioned to the point where the internal microphone was not picking up any audio. Rather than try to continue to film and hope the microphone issue would go away, I had chosen to take photos instead. Glad I did...
